I believe tomorrow is a brighter day, and together, we can make our community a better place for generations to come. I invite you to get to know me better, and join me in the fight to make CD 38 the best place to live in Texas for our hardworking families.
The youngest of three children, she learned what strength was from her mother, a proud US Army veteran who became a single mother early in Theresa’s life. She was raised in a home where poverty and abuse were commonplace and took a toll on her family. She witnessed the heartbreaking struggles of a single mother trying her very best to raise three children after their alcoholic father left them. With only her mother left to support them, the family home was foreclosed, and they were forced to move often between low-rent apartments, even a motel. Despite the difficulty, her mother instilled in her a foundation of determination, strength, and drive to help all people. The fire that continues to drive her today.
After high school, Theresa enlisted in the U.S. National Guard to give back to her country and provide herself with a path to higher education and a way out of poverty. Through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education. She went to Texas the day she finished student teaching, where she began working in our local schools, educating the youth for the future.
During the seven years that Theresa poured her heart into educating her students, she saw firsthand the many challenges that students in Texas face. Many of these challenges mirrored her own childhood experiences and lit a fire in her to want to help them even more. She used this passion to earn her Master’s in Education and became a school counselor. Now, she uses her time to advocate for students who need someone, just as she once had.
After moving to Texas, Theresa and her husband became aware of the great need for foster families in our state. They became foster parents, eventually adopting their beautiful children. Through this experience, she became aware of the pain and trauma that many children endure within a broken system that is supposed to help and protect them.
Rooted in her hardships as a young child and the lessons her mother taught her, she was inspired to be of service to her community. Her time in the National Guard allowed her to give back to her country while growing her personal resilience and responsibility. Her time as a teacher, foster mother, and school counselor has shown her where there are shortfalls in our current system, and pushed her to want to do even more for her community and country. She is running for US Representative for Texas Congressional District 38 to protect and advocate for the children and families of Texas regardless of political or personal beliefs. She will put people over politics to make the American dream accessible for ALL Americans!
America is progress. Since our founding, we have struggled and strived to improve on our more perfect union. It hasn’t always been linear- it hasn’t always been easy, but today is better than a century ago, better than our founding. There is still more progress to go as we continue together towards a more perfect
